2. Accessories comes with it
This Braun MGK3021 trimmer does come with 5 different tools to make all-in-one grooming kit. The accessories include the following things.
- 2 hair combs
- 2 beard combs
- 1 nose and ear trimmer
- 1 oil bottle
- A brush, and
- A 2.3v battery charger
Unlike Phillips MG3720/13 grooming kit, you gonna get combs with adjustable length settings. The length settings in this trimmer range from 0.5mm to 21mm. That's a big range. I personally recommend such a long-range, if you want a flexible hair trim. You might have a question on how to identify the length of combs. Well, that's pretty easy. Just look at the right side of the comb, and you will find the different length. The lengths are in mm - make sure that. See that in the below image.
One thing I don't like is its black-colour. All the combs have the same colour. Braun should at least give different colour combs. Anyway. That's not much important. The review unit that I've received had a brush and a small-size oil bottle to clean the appliance after the haircut. This device runs on the battery, which won't last longer than an hour. So, it needed to recharge. For recharge, this trimmer comes with 2.3v charger that recharges the trimmer batteries in almost 10 hours. Also, note that this MGK3021 trimmer comes with 2 AA batteries.
Furthermore, the head of this trimmer is easily detachable to switch between hair and nose hair trimmer. This grooming kit has a dedicated trimmer for nose and ear haircut. Also, there's one more advantage of having a detachable head. You can easily wash the blade. The rest of the box is quite simple, there's nothing special remains to cover. Let's head over to review its design.
3. Ergonomic design
This all-in-one trimmer is made of all-plastic from its outer body. The whole body is fully-plain except for the top part near to the blade. That part somewhat consists of a rough surface. Such design is recommended as it ensures the device won't slip from hand and the precise beard cut because of proper holding by hand.
At SimpleCare, we don't recommend a trimmer to have the all-plain body, which luckily this device haven't. For that, I thanks to Braun. Next, let me head over to the haircut experience, which is the heaviest and the most awaited section in this article.
4. Haircut experience
As this men trimmer is coming with 5 kinds of different accessories, it opens the way for all possible use. This trimmer can be used for beard, head, nose, and ear haircut. So, I'm gonna cover each part in detail. First, let me start with beard haircut. Before I start, keep in mind this trimmer has stainless steel blades. And SS blades are known for its long-time durability. In addition to that, the blades are self-sharpening which tell you that they will remain as sharp after 3+ years as they were on the first time of use.
Beard trimmer experience
As this trimmer comes with a variety of length settings, you've now many choices to go for. For stubble beard cut, you can choose the 1mm or 2mm comb. For a short beard cut, choose combs of length settings ranges from 3mm to 11mm. Lastly, for long beard cut, select 13mm to 21mm range comb. The 21mm length setting is maxed in this MGK3021 grooming kit. It doesn't matter which trimmer you buy, after the beard or haircut, your face gonna look almost the same provided that you use the same length setting. So, in my dedicated article on the trimmer buying guide, I've shown images of beard and head haircuts using different combs. You can see there how's the beard cut looks like with different length settings.
While beard cut, I found this trimmer a little bit more silent compared to other trimmers for men. For the quick use, it took almost 15 minutes of charging. And, after charging it for a complete 10 hours, I've used it first for the beard cut. And what I found was very shocking. This trimmer was able to give its full potential to cut the hair instead of pulling. During the complete beard trimming, I have not found it pulling my single hair. The beard cut went pretty smooth. The one thing lack in the trimmer is an integrated vacuum.
Integrated vacuum simply gonna suck all the cut hair. So, you don't have to clean the place. Indirectly it gonna save your time. Anyway, it has done the rest of the job pretty well. One important-thing I forget to mention here is that the blades don't get noticeably heated during beard cut.
Haircut experience
For the haircut, you've quite a long range of options remain. You can go with 3mm to 21mm. But, I've not started at 3mm, instead, I began with 9mm one. During the haircut, I found it average noisy, which wasn't annoying. As I've begun haircut just after the beard cut, I can say that the beard cut was silent. The haircut went completely smooth, not a single hair I found to be pulled-off. And, that's the quality expected in every trimmer that undergoes for review at SimpleCare India. Okay.
During the haircut, I found the blades got heated a little bit, but haven't crossed the temperature limit. The blades heating is also an important factor we consider before publishing the final ratings of the trimmer. If you need a trimmer in which the blades shouldn't pick the heat, you must go with a ceramic blade device. Let's head over to the nose and ear haircut.
Nose and ear haircut experience
Earlier, if you remember, I've mentioned that this Braun MGK3021 trimmer comes with a nose and ear trimmer. It's good but would be perfect if Braun has equipped an integrated vacuum inside it. During the nose haircut, I found it hadn't pulled-off any single hair. The entire haircut went very smooth. I've not tested it for the ear hair because of no enough long hair present. So, that's what my experience was with a Braun MGK3021 trimmer.
Overall, I found this trimmer quite smooth, but it fails to maintain its noise emission for every haircut.
5. Versatility in use
Is this Braun MG3021 trimmer is versatile to use? The simple and direct answer is NO. For the smooth and better use, it must be fully charged. It's really pretty awkward that this trimmer has no support for corded use.
It's a device for travellers, not for a barber who uses it all-the-day. In addition to that, the cordless use invites more freedom of movement during the haircut. But, that doesn't mean the corded-use trimmer is far behind. Nowadays, corded-use devices are coming with almost 3 meters long cable to supply electricity while ensuring good freedom of movement during a haircut.
Furthermore, this trimmer has an LED indicator for charging. But, it has no battery status indicator. The presence of a battery status indicator might make it a premium. But, it's in the dream now.
6. Final thoughts
This Braun MGK3021 all-in-one trimmer is a good alternative of Phillips MG3720/13 one. It does come with a variety of comb ranges from 1 to 21mm. However, the total length settings that range from 0.5 to 21mm makes it more useful. In addition to that, the length settings are easily adjustable. In terms of noise emission, this device is below-average during beard cut, but found average in the haircut. The body is not all-plain, it has a rough surface to the part near to the blade, which ensures the precise holding of it. The stainless steel blades are rust free and will be the same sharp after 3 years. It's self-sharpening blades a little bit get heated after continuous use of over a half an hour but overall is fine. Furthermore, it's really easy to switch between a beard trimmer and nose hair trimmer. The easily detachable head makes it possible to get it washed fully and easily without harming a device. Overall, I've rated this device 4.4 out of 5.
